Fall Into October with Plants: Workshops, Events and Plant Fun Across Calgary

October is one of the best months of the year to get your hands dirty. The air is crisp, the patios still have a little warmth, and everyone is looking for a cozy way to spend an evening or a lazy Sunday afternoon. At YYC Plants & Delivery, we have filled the month with hands on plant workshops across Calgary and surrounding areas, and there is something for every type of plant lover, from total beginners to seasoned collectors.

If you are searching for things to do in Calgary this October, here is your complete guide to our fall plant workshops, including dates, times, locations and what you will make.

Thank You, Calgary: Our Beginner Bonsai Workshop Was a Hit

We kicked off the month on October 3rd with our Beginner Bonsai Workshop at Little Modern Market, and it was a full house. With sessions running at 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, we watched dozens of guests learn the basics of shaping and styling their very first bonsai tree.

Thank you to everyone who came out. We loved seeing your beautiful bonsai creations, and we hope they are thriving on your shelves and windowsills. If you missed it, join our email list so you never miss the next bonsai date.

Live Succulents and Dried Floral Pumpkins

Welcome fall into your home with a centerpiece you will not find in any store. In this workshop, you will combine living succulents, dried florals and autumn charm to build a one of a kind pumpkin arrangement for your seasonal decor. It works beautifully as a dining table centerpiece, a front entry display or a thoughtful gift.

Each session runs about 1.5 hours. Choose the date and Calgary area location that works best for you:

  • Tuesday, October 6th at 6:30 PM at The Mash, Greenwich

  • Sunday, October 11th at 1:30 PM at Bow River Brewing

  • Thursday, October 15th at 6:30 PM at The Mash, Chestermere

This workshop is a favourite for date nights, friend groups and anyone who wants to decorate for the season without the stress. The succulents will keep growing long after the pumpkin season ends, so your centerpiece can live on well into winter.

Spooky Enclosed Terrariums Are Back with a New Vessel

By popular demand, our Spooky Enclosed Terrarium workshop returns this October, and this year it comes with a brand new glass vessel.

You will design a unique, balanced ecosystem inside glass, a miniature world that is largely self sustaining and needs minimal upkeep once it is established. It is a great choice if you love plants but worry about keeping them alive. To make it extra spooky, you can add live critters to your terrarium for a haunted touch.

Join us on one of these dates:

  • Wednesday, October 14th at 6:30 PM at Buffalo 9 Brewing (approximately 1.5 to 2 hours)

  • Sunday, October 18th at 1:30 PM at Bow River Brewing (approximately 2 hours)

Terrariums make wonderful desk companions, Halloween decor and gifts for the plant lover who has everything. Because the vessel is enclosed, it is also a smart option for homes with limited space or inconsistent light.

NEW: Carnivorous Miniature Bogs

This is the one we are most excited about. For the first time, YYC Plants & Delivery is offering a Carnivorous Miniature Bog workshop, and it fits the spooky season perfectly.

You will create your very own miniature carnivorous garden and choose your carnivorous companion:

  • The Venus Flytrap, famous for its snappy jaws and one of the most recognized plants on the planet.

  • The Sundew, a delicate beauty that lures insects with glistening, sticky droplets.

Carnivorous plants have a loyal following for good reason. They are fascinating to watch, and they are natural pest control for fruit flies around the house. This workshop is a great way to learn what these unusual plants need to thrive, and you take your bog home to enjoy.

Dates and locations:

  • Wednesday, October 21st at 6:30 PM at Buffalo 9 Brewing (about 1.5 hours)

  • Sunday, October 25th at 1:00 PM or 3:00 PM at Bow River Brewing (about 1.5 hours)

Because this workshop is brand new, we expect these dates to fill up quickly, especially the Sunday sessions.

Why Plant Workshops Are the Perfect Calgary Night Out

Calgary has a thriving craft beverage and restaurant scene, and our workshops fit right into it. We bring the plants, the supplies and the guidance. You bring your friends and your creativity.

Here is why so many people make our workshops a regular part of their month:

It is social. Workshops are a natural way to connect with friends, family, partners or coworkers without the pressure of planning something elaborate.

It is creative and relaxing. Working with soil, moss, flowers and living plants is a screen free way to unwind, and you leave with something you made yourself.

It is beginner friendly. You do not need a green thumb. Our team guides you through every step, and you learn how to care for what you build.

It is local. We run events across Calgary and surrounding areas, including Greenwich and Chestermere, in partnership with local breweries, taverns and community venues.

You take something home. Every workshop ends with a living, one of a kind creation to display in your home or office, or to give as a gift.

Planning a Group Outing or Corporate Event?

Beyond our public workshops, YYC Plants & Delivery partners with local businesses and organizations to host private and corporate events. If you are planning a team building afternoon, a client appreciation night or a holiday gathering, we would love to talk. We also offer plant sales, delivery, corporate plants and residential plant services if you want to bring more green into your space year round.
