Bringing Terrariums to Chestermere: A Workshop at The Mash

Calgary and its surrounding communities have found a fresh way to spend an evening together, and it does not involve a screen, a spreadsheet, or a to-do list. It involves moss, soil, tiny glass vessels, and a room full of people leaning over trays of plants, laughing about who can fit the most greenery into a jar without it toppling over.

That was the scene this past week when YYC Plants & Delivery hosted a terrarium-building workshop at The Mash in Chestermere, and it was easily one of the most joyful pop-up events we have run in the area so far.

Bringing Terrariums to Chestermere: A Workshop at The Mash

Why Chestermere Keeps Asking For More Plant Workshops - A Workshop at The Mash

Chestermere has quietly become one of the best communities around Calgary for this kind of gathering. The lake town vibe, the tight-knit local businesses, and the appetite for something a little different from the usual dinner and drinks night all make it a natural fit for a hands-on plant experience. When The Mash reached out about hosting a private event, we knew the terrarium workshop would land well here. It did not disappoint. A workshop at The Mash.

Guests arrived to find their own workstation set up and waiting: a clear glass carafe-style vessel with a cork lid, a small mound of living moss with the roots still attached, a shallow dish divided into little compartments filled with black lava rock, decorative pebbles, bark chips, and fine sand, plus a full set of mini tools including a rake, a brush, tweezers, and a scoop. It looked almost like a tiny science lab crossed with a garden shed, which is exactly the kind of playful setup that gets people excited before they have even touched a single leaf.

What Actually Happens During A Terrarium Workshop

For anyone who has never built a terrarium before, the process is part gardening and part sculpture. Our facilitators walked the group through each layer step by step, starting with drainage material at the base of the glass, followed by a thin layer of activated charcoal to keep things fresh, then a bed of soil deep enough to hold roots. From there, guests chose from a table loaded with small plant varieties, things like fittonia (often called nerve plant for its striking veined leaves), trailing baby tears, deep red coleus cuttings, and a few textured succulents for contrast.

Watching guests select their plants was one of our favorite parts of the night. Some people went straight for the boldest color, grabbing the deep burgundy coleus first. Others wanted a calmer, more textured look and built their whole design around the pale variegated fittonia. There is no wrong answer in a terrarium, which takes a lot of pressure off people who might otherwise worry about doing it right. Once the plants were nestled into the soil, guests added their moss around the base, then finished the top layer with their choice of decorative stone. The little scoops and tweezers made it easy for even first timers to place everything precisely, and the small rake tools were perfect for smoothing the soil and moss into place at the end.

By the end of the evening, every single terrarium looked completely different, even though everyone started with the same tray of supplies. That is the magic of this kind of workshop. It gives a group a shared experience while still letting every person walk away with something that is genuinely their own.

More Than Just A Craft Night

What made this particular evening stand out was the social side of it. The Mash provided the space and the atmosphere, with the bar humming in the background and a relaxed, casual energy in the room. Guests who came in not knowing anyone quickly found themselves chatting with the table next to them about plant care questions, swapping tips on where to place a terrarium once it gets home, and asking our team about light requirements and watering schedules.

This is really the heart of what YYC Plants & Delivery is trying to build across Calgary and the surrounding areas. We are a workshop and events company at our core. While we also handle plant sales, delivery, corporate plant programs, and residential plant services, our real focus is on bringing people together through hands on plant experiences, whether that is a public class, a private booking like this one, or a partnership with another local business.

Why Businesses Like The Mash Choose To Partner With Us

Venues across Calgary, Chestermere, Airdrie, Cochrane, and the wider region are increasingly looking for programming that feels fresh and a little unexpected. A terrarium workshop checks a lot of boxes for a venue partner. It draws a crowd that might not normally walk through the door on a weeknight, it photographs beautifully for social media, and it gives guests a tangible reason to come back, since most people want to show off how their plant is doing a few weeks later.

For The Mash specifically, the private workshop meant a full room of engaged guests enjoying food and drinks while they built their terrariums, which is exactly the kind of activation that benefits everyone involved. Our team handled the plant sourcing, the tool kits, the soil and hardscape materials, and the guided instruction, while the venue provided the space and the hospitality.

It is a simple partnership model, and it is one we would love to bring to more restaurants, breweries, community centers, and event spaces throughout Calgary and the surrounding towns.

Bringing This Experience To Your Own Event

Terrarium workshops are just one piece of what we offer. Depending on the group and the occasion, we also run succulent planting sessions, seasonal floral workshops, and custom plant building experiences tailored to corporate teams, birthday celebrations, bridal parties, and community fundraisers. Whether it is a small private group of ten friends or a full venue takeover with fifty or more guests, our team builds the experience around what fits the space and the crowd.

We have found that plant workshops work especially well for groups who want something interactive but low pressure. There is no performance anxiety like there can be with paint nights or complicated craft projects. Everyone ends up with a small living thing to take home and care for, which tends to keep the good memories from the event going long after the night is over. Guests water their terrarium a few weeks later and think back on the evening, which is a kind of lasting impression that a lot of events simply cannot offer.

Serving Calgary And The Surrounding Communities

YYC Plants & Delivery is proud to be based in Calgary while actively serving communities throughout the surrounding region, including Chestermere, Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, and beyond. Our goal is simple: we want to welcome 500 new clients every month to workshops happening across these communities, whether that is through public classes, private bookings, or partnerships with local businesses who want to bring something new to their space.

The evening at The Mash in Chestermere is a perfect example of what that looks like in practice. A local venue, a room full of curious guests, and a table covered in moss, soil, and tiny plants that turned into an evening nobody in that room will forget anytime soon.
