Build Your Own Carnivorous Miniature Bog: A Hands On Plant Workshop in Calgary
Updated: 5 hours ago
What is a carnivorous miniature bog workshop? It is a guided, hands on class where you plant a real carnivorous plant, like a Venus flytrap or a sundew, into a small bog garden you design yourself and take home the same day. YYC Plants & Delivery runs this workshop in Calgary and surrounding areas, and it has quickly become one of our most talked about experiences this year.
If you are looking for a fun night out, a creative afternoon with friends, or something different for your team, this is it. No plant experience is needed. We bring every plant, tool and supply, and we walk you through each step so you leave with a living piece you are proud of.
In this article you will learn what the workshop includes, how to choose between a Venus flytrap and a sundew, what happens during the class, how to keep your bog thriving at home, and how to book a private carnivorous bog workshop for your own group.
What Is Included in the Carnivorous Miniature Bog Workshop?
Every seat includes everything you need to build a complete miniature bog, guided by a YYC Plants & Delivery instructor. Here is what each guest gets:
An instructor led workshop from start to finish
One miniature bog pot to build in
A carnivorous plant from a select variety
Live sphagnum moss
A choice of water loving companion plants to pair with your carnivorous plant
All supplies, tools and decorative materials used during the class
The workshop runs about one to one and a quarter hours, which makes it easy to fit into a weekend afternoon or an evening after work. Plants, design options and décor vary from session to session, so every bog is one of a kind. This fall, our sessions include Halloween inspired décor, like tiny skulls and stones, which gives each bog a playful, spooky look that fits the season.
Who is it for?
The recommended age is 14 and up. Guests under 14 are welcome with a parent or guardian, with a maximum of one adult per guest under 14 because space at the table is limited. It works well for plant lovers, couples, friend groups, coworkers and anyone who wants a creative break from screens.
Venus Flytrap or Sundew: Which Carnivorous Plant Should You Choose?
At the start of the workshop, you choose your carnivorous companion. Both are great for beginners, and both are fascinating to watch.
Venus flytrap. This is the plant most people picture when they hear "carnivorous." Its leaves form hinged traps lined with fine bristles. When an insect touches the trigger hairs inside, the trap snaps shut. Guests love the drama, and kids especially enjoy it. Choose a flytrap if you want a bold centrepiece with clear, sculptural shape.
Sundew. Sundews are more delicate. Their leaves are covered in tiny tentacles tipped with glistening, sticky droplets that sparkle in the light. Insects land, get stuck, and the leaf slowly curls around them. Choose a sundew if you love fine texture and a jewel like look up close.
Not sure? Your instructor will help you pick based on your style and where the bog will live at home.
What Happens During the Workshop?
You build your bog step by step, with your instructor guiding the whole table. Here is how a typical session flows:
Welcome and plant pick. You get your tray, tools and bog pot, then choose your carnivorous plant.
Layer the base. You layer your planting materials to create a moist, bog style environment.
Plant your carnivorous companion. You gently nestle your flytrap or sundew into place.
Add moss and companions. Live sphagnum moss and your water loving companion plants fill in the landscape.
Decorate. Stones, pebbles and seasonal décor bring your design to life.
Care walkthrough. Before you leave, your instructor explains how to keep your bog healthy at home.
By the end, the room is full of miniature landscapes, and no two look alike. It ends the way every good workshop should: everyone holding up their finished bog for the group photo.
How Do You Care for a Carnivorous Miniature Bog at Home?
Carnivorous plants are easier to keep than most people expect, as long as you follow a few simple rules. You will get aftercare guidance at the workshop, and these basics will help:
Use the right water. Water with distilled water or rainwater. Tap water often contains minerals that can build up and harm carnivorous plants over time.
Keep it moist. Bog plants like damp conditions. Do not let the moss and soil dry out completely.
Give it bright light. A sunny windowsill is a good spot. Low light can leave plants weak and less colourful.
Skip the fertilizer. These plants get nutrients from insects, and regular plant food can damage them.
Do not trigger the traps for fun. Each Venus flytrap trap can only close a limited number of times before it stops working, so let it catch real insects.
Expect a winter rest. Venus flytraps naturally slow down in cooler months. Some leaves may die back. This is normal.
