Creating a Bonsai at Bow River Brewing: A Hands-On Plant Workshop in Calgary, Alberta - YYC Plants & Delivery

Sunday afternoon at Bow River Brewing looked a little different this week.

Instead of just pints and pizza, the long communal tables were lined with bonsai soil, trainer pots, wire, and a whole lot of green. Thirty one people showed up for our Create A Bonsai workshop, and by the end of the afternoon, every single one of them left with a small styled tree they built themselves.

Let's dive into how the day went, what made it click for so many first timers, and why Bow River Brewing has become one of our favourite southeast Calgary venues to host a workshop like this.

A Full House in Southeast Calgary

Bow River Brewing sits just off Blackfoot Trail near Chinook Centre, in the Manchester and Alyth industrial pocket of southeast Calgary that has quietly become a destination for craft beer and community events. It is an easy stop for anyone coming from Ramsay, Inglewood, the Beltline, or even further out in Midnapore or Willow Park, and the brewery's big open taproom, complete with Bow River artwork on the walls and a pizza oven tucked in the corner, gives a workshop like this plenty of room to breathe.

A group of 31 filled the space for our 1:30 PM session, which is one of the larger turnouts we have had for a bonsai class this year. Long benches were set with individual work trays, tools, and a plant waiting for each guest, and by the time everyone settled in with a complimentary beverage in hand, the room had that easy, chatty energy that breweries are so good at creating. Strangers at one end of the table were trading tips with strangers at the other end within the first twenty minutes.

From Nursery Plant to Bonsai: What Everyone Made

Each guest started with a young 4.5 to 5-inch plant selected from a rotating variety that included boxwood, olive tree, Portulacaria afra (dwarf jade), and Schefflera arboricola (dwarf umbrella tree). Trays of these plants lined the side tables before the session began, their full green canopies giving very little hint of the more sculptural shape they would take on by the end of the afternoon.

The process followed the same fundamentals used in real bonsai practice. Guests started by gently removing their plant from its nursery pot and combing out the root ball to see what they were working with, loosening old soil and trimming back roots that were too long or tangled. From there it was on to selecting a bonsai trainer pot, mixing in fresh bonsai-specific soil, and settling the plant at an angle and position that felt right for its shape.

Then came the styling. Guests used aluminum wire to gently guide branches into new positions, coaxing a naturally bushy young plant into something with more visible structure and intention. Scissors came out for detail trimming, shaping the canopy and removing any growth that was crowding the design guests had in mind.

By the final twenty minutes of the session, trays that had started with leggy green starter plants were full of small, deliberately shaped trees, each one a little different depending on the plant variety and the choices its owner made along the way.

The Trickiest Parts: Wiring and Trusting Your Own Eye

If there is one thing almost every guest wrestled with, it was getting the wire on correctly. Wrapping wire around a living branch without damaging it, at an angle firm enough to actually hold a new shape once released, takes a bit of feel that most people do not have walking in the door. Our facilitator spent a lot of one on one time at each seat, showing guests how much pressure to use, how to anchor the wire at the base of the trunk, and how to avoid crossing wraps in a way that would crimp the bark.

The second challenge was less technical and more personal: feeling confident in the design itself. Bonsai styling is subjective, and there is no single correct answer for how a tree should look. Several guests admitted they kept second guessing their instincts, wondering if they were bending a branch too far or not far enough, or whether their tree looked more like the classic textbook shapes shown at the front of the room.

That is a completely normal part of learning bonsai, and it is exactly why having an instructor walk the room matters. Rather than telling people what their tree should look like, our facilitator asked questions that helped each guest figure out what they actually wanted their tree to look like, then helped them get there with technique.

By the end of the session, that early hesitation had mostly turned into pride. People were holding their trees up to compare with the table next to them, snapping photos, and asking follow up questions about ongoing care, which is usually the best sign that a workshop landed the way it was supposed to.

We come back to Bow River Brewing regularly, and this session was a good reminder of why. The taproom is spacious enough to comfortably seat a group of 31 with full work trays and elbow room, which is not something every brewery in Calgary can offer.

It is also a genuinely well loved neighbourhood spot on its own, known locally for its rotating tap list, wood fired pizza, and the Saturday bagpipers who occasionally practice right in the taproom, open to the public and always a bit of a surprise for first time visitors.

For guests coming from nearby communities like Ramsay, Inglewood, Manchester, and the Beltline, or driving in from further south along Macleod Trail, Bow River Brewing sits close enough to Chinook Centre and Blackfoot Trail to be an easy, central stop. That accessibility, combined with the relaxed brewery atmosphere, is part of why so many of our Bow River Brewing sessions sell out and why we keep this venue in regular rotation for both bonsai and Plant Bingo events.
